The Administrative Services Center (ASC) Audio Visual (AV) Services team at Georgia Tech plays a crucial role in shaping the campus experience by managing audiovisual systems and infrastructure in not only instructional spaces but also research labs, administrative areas, and event venues. Their goal is to build and deploy systems that ensure consistent user experience across the entire campus, a feat that has earned them recognition from peer institutions.
Despite the ever-changing materials and technologies, the team’s philosophy remains steadfast: innovate while creating reliable systems. This balance between standardization and customization is essential given the dynamic nature of Georgia Tech. The team oversees 169 classrooms and over 100 other instructional spaces. Overall, the AV Services footprint includes over 1000 AV systems in classroom spaces, instructional labs research labs, office spaces, and more.
One of the team’s biggest opportunities is addressing the rising need for USB-C connections, which have become popular in consumer products like laptops. Adapting to this trend is necessary, and the team aims to complete these enhancements across campus within the next two years. Past enhancements include improved annotation capabilities for faculty and integrated cameras and microphones in instructional spaces.
Collaboration and partnership are key to the team’s success. They work closely with internal and external infrastructure and sustainability partners, architects, consultants, managers, and end users to determine needs, implement the best designs, and manage expectations prior to service delivery. This collaborative approach ensures that the systems they deploy meet the various needs of the campus community.
Looking ahead, the AV Services team has several exciting projects on the horizon. These include the evaluation and test implementation of auto-tracking cameras, full-scale classroom upgrades over the summer, and the addition of whiteboard cameras in instructional spaces. The development of Tech Square 3 is also in the works, promising further advancements in campus technology.
The team’s efforts are in part supported by technology fees, which fund classroom upgrades for instructional spaces. Through their dedication and innovative spirit, the AV Services team continues to enhance the campus experience, making Georgia Tech a leader in educational technology.
